I have only one favour to ask of protesters: please STOP flying the Australian flag upside down.

Yes, the upside down flag is a worry. Other than that, it was a great day. And good to see well attended protests elsewhere too.

    Wonderful stuff!

Our own Gab has reported that the Archbishop of Melbourne has banned priests from marching with these protesters – despite the Church facing its own looming assault from Andrews. Instead of mobilising Catholics as Mannix did (and as these kill-the-billers did), he has – EEK! – put out a statement.

    Yep, that’ll work.

    Just ask.

Why do you not like the upside flag??

    Yep, that’ll work.

Andrews will appoint his own bishops just like Frank authorised Emperor Xi to appoint whom he preferred.

Jug Ears will be featured picture in ALL victorian skools.

Flying a national flag upside down is meant to be an international sign of distress. It no longer is anyway – if it ever was.

The protocols governing the use of Australia’s flag prohibit it. The flag should also never touch the ground and never be flown at night unless floodlit. These rules either mean something or they don’t. I prefer that they do.

In the US, flying the Stars and Stripes upside down is a dangerous thing to do:

So much for the exhortation Be Not Afraid. Once worked out well for a Pope, a President and a Prime Minister. But that’s ancient history. Today’s challenges, threats and assaults require nuanced responses.

    require more nuanced responses

    From here:

For hundreds of years, inverted flags have been harnessed as a signal of distress. Hoisting the ensign upside-down was also a potentially covert way in which sailors might share that their ship had been taken by hostile forces and was being manoeuvred nefariously. The United States Flag Code expresses the idea concisely, stating that a flag should never be flown upside-down, “except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.”

    My bolding.

Seems to me flying the Australian flag upside down is completely appropriate for the situation we are in.
Maybe it is also appropriate that the real flag of free Australians looks the same both ways up

  9. Eyrie says:

It is also recognised as a form of protest.

  10. C.L. says:

…a potentially covert way in which sailors might share that their ship had been taken by hostile forces and was being manoeuvred nefariously.

    This is mostly a myth.
Pirates have taken over the ship but they allow you to rearrange the flag?

  11. local oaf says:

I take your point about protocol and respect for the flag CL.

On the other hand, in the current situation where even “conservative” governments have completely trashed our constitution, I still believe it does send a signal to the world simply because most people believe the “distress signal” myth.

Not just covid either, the trashing of our constitution has been happening for a long time.
Who can forget our supposedly conservative government bypassing the constitution with a flimsy “phone poll” style plebiscite to approve legislation without having to take it to the electorate?

We are in distress, even if the signal used was disrespectful. Sadly, our armed forces are more likely to be in the streets intimidating the population than demanding respect for our flag these days.

Look on the bright side. At least they’re still allowed to offer prayers from the altar for the ‘success’ of COP26, as my Dominicans have been doing for the past few weeks.

  13. FlyingPigs says:

    C.L.

I accept and recognize the point you are making.

Maybe a yellow flag with skull and crossed bones emboldened with southern cross may be more appropriate.

I used to have one of those lighters.

It had a badge on it.

So only “mostly a myth”. Think of it as 7700 on an airliner transponder (hijack code).
Again, totally appropriate for the situation we are in.
Our governments have totally disrespected our laws and customs, why should we respect their flag?

  17. Eddystone says:

I think flying it upside down as a sign of distress is ok in the circumstances.

I really object to Morrison using it as a face mask.

    Yep. Me too.

  19. a reader says:

Eyrie if you’re using 7700 as the hijack code on an aircraft transponder you’re not going to get the support you need. 75 staying alive, 76 need a fix, 77 going to heaven
