Times of unusual stress such as the Covid years seem to aggravate what I want to call the apocalyptic temperament, at the core of which is paranoia.

Symptoms include the wild overdramatising of events, thinking trapped in obsessional closed circuits, delusional fears, conspiracy theories and, at the extreme, belief that some cataclysm is about to bring the world to an end.
