    C.L., That is a classic.

  2. C.L. says:

    Cheers, NFA.

The Smith assault was an utter disgrace.

That was a serious hit. Live to air, global audience; then given a standing ovation for winning an Oscar. He should have been arrested.

He got away with it for two reasons: famous and black.

Never had much time for Chris Rock but I do now. He stood right there and carried on without belying any real shock.

Some great Tweets on this and the original footage if you missed (!) it at Rita’s:

All the world is a stage!

Yep…but black on black violence is quite okay. Everyday blacks in the US are murdered by other blacks. Nothing to see here.

  5. Entropy says:

On the bright side it improved ratings for the academy snorefest.

  6. rosie says:

Anyone else would have been arrested.

  7. Gab says:

    The whole thing looked staged.

  8. MatrixTransform says:

sorry fellas, that ‘hit’ was the fakest wankery I’ve seen since the horse got knocked out in Blazing Saddles

  9. C.L. says:

What is the angle for ‘staging’ the worst behaviour ever seen at the Oscars?

  10. MatrixTransform says:

never try to rationalise the behaviour of the disordered mind.
you’ll go mad just trying to make it all make sense

one could stack all the ‘whys’ on one side of the ledger and it would still all add up to one single ‘how’

  11. Gab says:

Ratings, C.L. And attention. People will write about this for days.

  12. Buccaneer says:

I don’t think it was staged. Even though the act itself looked a little fake. Smith was laughing along when the shot cut to him, then it cut to his wife who was very unimpressed. In time the camera cut to Rock and then cut to Smith walking up to the stage, something changed. Very likely Smith got told to stand up for her, verbally or non verbally. If it was staged, he would have known not to laugh and it would most likely have been spontaneous.

Look closely at the reactions, one of the interesting points is why no one has asked her if she said something to trigger that reaction. That doesn’t make an excuse for his behaviour.

    I don’t think that’s the key thing.
I think the joke simply went over his head in the first instance. Either he then remembered or was told that Demi Moore’s GI Jane character had a masculine buzz-cut.

  14. C.L. says:

What struck me about the red carpet and coverage (sans slap) was how ugly today’s ‘stars’ are. I’m just going on the pics etc I saw in sidebars while news-surfing. I didn’t put any dedicated time into watching the ceremony, of course. There was Nicole Kidman looking as frightening as ever, her husband Keith Urban looking more like a lesbian than last year. All of them looked beaten up, jaded (from the inside), poorly dressed and trashy – they exude damaged nothing-ness.

  15. Lee says:

That was a serious hit. Live to air, global audience; then given a standing ovation for winning an Oscar. He should have been arrested.

Had it been a white actor striking a black one – for whatever reason – one could imagine the Twitter meltdown.
Then he’d be not just a “thug”, but a “racist!” as well

Yep…but black on black violence is quite okay. Everyday blacks in the US are murdered by other blacks. Nothing to see here.

Strange (not) how those instances are almost never highlighted by the MSM.

  16. Lee says:

The Academy Awards jumped the shark many years ago.

  17. Baba says:

    Smith’s slap was very gay.

Either way, had it been staged, he would have been alert to the cue, he clearly was not. The joke going over his head also does not preclude him from needing to be given a nudge or a wink to take the course of action that occurred. Her body language suggests that someone was going to get it.

  19. Tel says:

Slapstick used to be considered artful comedy … I dunno why it ever went out of style but this would be a great time to bring it back.

  20. Davey Boy says:

meh. Our own Ernie Dingo set the standard years ago.
Verily, we live in slap-happy times.

Slapstick is reserved for the US president now

  23. Perplexed of Brisbane says:

What does Jada have over Will? They have an open marriage but we only hear of her partners. You would think any partners he has had would be spilling out of the shadows about now.

Would it have something to do with certain flight logs?

He doesn’t seem very happy with the arrangement. He could have dumped her if she only wanted it. Instead he embarrassed himself on TV ‘defending’ her.

  24. twostix says:

Aristocracies always go through their “honour” fighting based phase. Interestingly nobody ever recorded that it was started and driven by feeble cucks raging over being mocked by in public over their dominant, scheming degenerate wives and lashing out at the mocker under her command, but it makes total sense! Update the history books.
