Ukraine: Our bombing of nuclear reactor a Russian war crime

Is the unhinged Zelensky trying to cause a European nuclear disaster?

Leaving aside Ukraine’s now customary torture chamber theatre, in the above-linked report the ABC uncritically retails misinformation that is not only highly dangerous but comically disingenuous:

Ukraine narrowly escaped disaster during fighting at the weekend that rocked Europe’s largest atomic power plant with a barrage of shells, some falling near reactors and damaging a radioactive waste storage building, the UN nuclear watchdog said.

“Reuters could not immediately verify which side was responsible.”

On Monday, Russia and Ukraine traded blame for at least a dozen explosions at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, which has been under Russian control since soon after it invaded the country on February 24, but is across the Dnipro river from areas controlled by Kyiv.

Mr Zelenskyy urged NATO members to guarantee protection from “Russian sabotage” at nuclear facilities… Whoever fired on the plant was taking “huge risks and gambling with many people’s lives”, Rafael Grossi, director-general of the IAEA, said.

When the media runs a faux-objective “traded blame” angle, you can be sure Kiev is in the wrong. Like the missile that killed two farmers in Poland last week, these shells were fired by Ukraine – arguably for the same reason: to start a world war. Russian forces at Zaporizhzhia are not bombing themselves. The Ukrainian government is confident the journalists and officials who invented the Russia Hoax and spiked the Laptop From Hell are willing to promote even the most absurd lies on its behalf. This in turn emboldens Western hive-minders to go on financing another endless war – sure in the knowledge they will never be held accountable.

    you are an idiot.

Ukraine was defending itself against missiles that bombed apartments, electricity stations and those buildings which are involved in water. ALL war crimes. No russian missiles no defensive missiles going off target.
what evidence do you have they wish to start a world war. NONE!

Why would Ukraine bomb a nuke station that would spread and kill ukrainians?

The russians were involved in trying to change the 2016 election. a senate committee unanimously found this. ALL top security officials said this.

your kremlin propaganda get more stupid each day

  2. NFA says:

  3. C.L. says:

Mmyes, the Russians are bombing themselves!

    Of course.

In the “I’ll believe it when I see it category” but I saw a notice, somewhere, that the Republican House will call all 51 signatories to give Congressional testimony.

    LOL

  5. NFA says:

    @ real Trampis

How much actual, personal, real money have you donated to the “heroic” Ukrainians?

The Russians, and the Soviets before them, interfered in western elections as a matter of routine. Where they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams in 2016 (in terms of propaganda, not in actually affecting the outcome) was that the western MSM, all hysterically anti-Trump, took the usual minor interference and blew it up into a major influence, aided by the completely bogus Steele document.

Putin couldn’t believe his luck, in having huge numbers of western so-called “progressives” magnifying a very minor Russian action. Are you and your colleagues proud to have supported Putin on that occasion?

  7. NFA says:

    @ real Trampis

    you are a fucking imbecile.

enjoy your future of sheltering in underground rail and road tunnels to keep warm in your useless cities.

when the cats, rats and dogs are all gone ‘who you gunna eat’?

    LOL.

I wouldn’t trust a word out of the poisonously politicised U.S. intelligence or alphabet agencies.

Time was when leftists wouldn’t either.

    Lee

It is absolutely astounding what has occurred with leftists.

Even a lot of the 1960’s protest songs now have a poignant relevance for we in the current dark ages.

More baddies vs baddies. Russia isn’t doing the logical thing which would be to have a negotiated exclusion zone, say 2 km radius. Instead they’ve been using it as a semiprotected location to keep stockpiles and artillery. The Ukrainians then have been shelling these stockpiles and artillery and blaming the Russians. It’s all childish and transparent. As far as I’m concerned if they both want a Fukushima in their backyard that’s their problem not mine. Fortunately I understand radiation more than the MSM does though.

    Hah!

    More Putin Talking Points.

  12. NFA says:

That was a sad LOL by the way.

  13. C.L. says:

As always, a sane analysis, Bruce.

But all of the accounts I’m reading of this make out that that the origins of the shelling cannot be ascertained.

This is a deliberate and ridiculous lie.

  14. Bruce of Newcastle says:

I’m sure the Ukrainians have been shelling the area because the Russians have been trying to use it as a protected location. I don’t blame the Russian guys, no one likes to be killed or maimed by artillery fire. However the issue itself is at general staff level, and clearly both the UGS and the RGS have no problem with the plant simultaneously being a pawn and game of chicken.

  15. NFA says:

It distracts from the communist socialist alliance destruction of the Judaeo-Christian World.

    The West is WEF’d.

  16. C.L. says:

Bruce, I cannot accept this is a staff level matter.
Zelensky is suggesting the bombings (Ukraine’s) constitute a trigger for NATO intervention.
    That is high policy.

  17. Yank says:

Desperate talking points. As ever, Ukraine is villain. Putin saintly.

  18. NFA says:

farq off Kristina Marie Kerscher Keneally

you communist socialist alliance wef shill

  19. Franx says:

How is the Zaporozhzhia nuclear plant exploited as a game of chicken by the Russians?
I mean, are the Russians using the Zaporozhzhia nuclear facility as an offensive missile launching site from which to draw Ukranian ‘defensive missiles’ (as NT had it) aimed at the nuclear plant?

  20. Yank says:

NFI: so stupid. It was Trump who imposed the Afghanistan withdrawal order. Millet has confirmed. Get your talking points right.

  21. NFA says:

    LOL

Is @Yank a Complete and Utter farqwit.

    Let “it” speak.

  22. Tel says:

You have just demonstrated that you spend zero time reading other people’s comments. What part of “Baddies vs Baddies” do you find confusing?

Quote anyone who claims that Putin is “saintly” or even close. You are full of it and a low grade troll … here to derail and obfuscate and that’s about the most your kind ever do.

NFI: so stupid. It was Trump who imposed the Afghanistan withdrawal order. Millet has confirmed. Get your talking points right.

It was Trump, indeed. He also ordered that equipment should be withdrawn, not abandoned to the Taliban.

It was Biden, helped by incompetents in the Pentagon, who turned it into a shambles, leaving billions worth of equipment and many US citizens and Afghan staff behind, and losing casualties on the way.

  24. Tel says:

Yank, this thread has nothing to do with Afghanistan. You are splatting any old comment in any thread. You are not responding to what other people say … you toss random crap.

I really dislike low grade wrecking trolls.

  25. C.L. says:

It was Trump who imposed the Afghanistan withdrawal order.

The Afghanistan War was Trump’s fault.
    Ookay. ⚆ _ ⚆

By the way, have all those abandoned personnel been evacuated yet?

  26. Jannie says:

If Mentis was on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific he would be the first to walk the plank. Its not a good idea to insult the skipper when you are non paying supercargo.

Trampis, do not insult the host, its bad manners and it is stupid.

  27. Petros says:

The Zaporizhzhie plant accounts for about half of the electricity generated by nuclear power in the Ukraine and about a fifth of the electricity overall. It’s quite important in that regard. No doubt being used as a pawn in all this in that respect and also with the threat of it becoming another Chernobyl. I don’t think the Ukraine will be the great wheat producer it once was but rather a no-go buffer zone. Very sad. To the victor go the spoiled.

  28. Cassie of Sydney says:

“I really dislike low grade wrecking trolls.”

    Me too.

  29. Diogenes says:

The russians were involved in trying to change the 2016 election. a senate committee unanimously found this. ALL top security officials said this.

I am surprised both parties aren’t trying to hire those Russians who in 2016 spent less than 250k on Facebook and about the same on Twitter, when Hillary spent millions on both platforms and hundreds of millions on other media the Russians had no access to.

Whoda think the Russians understand America and Americans better than people who live there.

  30. Not Trampis says:

just to show deplorables are stupid, lazy and ignorant NO security people have ever talked about the laptop. It is with the FBI.
Just for the memory it is Putin q who has the record who cares nothing for human life. Why would he cares if there was an explosion at an Ukrainian nuke plant. the Ukrainians would.

Isn’t it amazing how CL cannot bring himself to even criticize Putin’s numerous war crimes, No moral compass

  31. Boambee John says:

    Non Mentis

just to show deplorables are stupid, lazy and ignorant NO security people have ever talked about the laptop. It is with the FBI.

It is hard to believe that even Non Mentis can be so stupid as to be unaware of the front-page news about 51 (count ’em, 51) intelligence officials who signed a letter to the media waaaay back, declaring publicly that their “professional” assessment was that the Hunter Bunter laptop was “Wussian disinformation”.

But here he is, displaying again the gross ignorance and stupidity of so-called “progressives”, even as the US MSM finally admits that the laptop is the genuine article. He must have failed pre-school!

  32. Bruce of Newcastle says:

Franx – I haven’t checked for a while but the Russians were using the site as a protected place to store stuff like artillery ammunition since Ukraine has had a fair bit of success destroying ammunition stockpiles. I think they were also firing artillery from that area, but I’m less sure of that.

It becomes a game of chicken since using the plant to try to protect military assets incites the Ukrainians to shoot at those targets – which they’d been doing. So the Russians have an incentive to move their stuff closer and closer to the reactors in hope of it not being shelled and destroyed. Thereby risking a nuclear disaster.

If they both got brains and stayed right away from the plant it’d be a mature battlefield decision, but at the moment they’re like kindergarten kids. Infantile behaviour.

As I understand it the plant is disconnected from the Ukrainian grid due to destruction of the power lines from it, which has been a problem for cooling requirements. But I think the IAEA have brought in diesel generators for emergency cooling water circulation. This too is risked by the stupid shelling that’s been going on.

  33. Yank says:

Tel: you clearly didn’t look at NFIs link.
A bit sick how many if you say things and then deny it. Classic doublespeak of the talking points memo style.

  34. Franx says:

    BoN
It sort of makes sense that the Russians would utilise the Zaporozhzhia nuclear plant site for weapons storage. It may be unfair, but it makes sense. On the other hand, Ukraine shelling the site may be fair, but it’s pretty mad.
