But what if, instead of the usual go-along types, the Liberals found themselves a leader pledged to repudiate the party’s wan commitment to core principles?

This idea that the Libs can turn it around by embracing conservative values is pure wishful thinking. We are talking about a party full of people without conservative values who feel the money tap being turned off if they don’t go Teal. It’s the SKY news mistake, thinking the Libs actually still have conservatives in their ranks sufficient to change.
They don’t and they won’t. No “red meat” wave is coming. It’s wishful thinking that a bunch of spineless leeches feeding on a rotting carcass will see the light.
Wishful thinking : wish in one hand and crap in another, see which one fills first.

Thank you for posting the link to Roger Franklin’s piece. It’s superb. I read it last night. I think Roger says it best. Not being a Victorian, I didn’t vote in Saturday’s election but Franklin’s words perfectly summed up how I felt when I went to vote in May.

As an aside, I note how Labor, milking further outrage over Generalissimo Morrison’s secret collection of portfolios, now plans to censor Morrison. Do I feel any sympathy for Morrison? Nope. As I wrote last night, this same Morrison, in February 2020, allowed the senate Liberals to join with Labor and the Greens to censor Bettina Arndt. This same Morrison joined in the public censoring, ridiculing, shaming and lynching of…

    Cardinal George Pell
    Our SAS soldiers
    Christine Holgate
    Andrew Laming
    Alan Tudge
    Christian Porter
    Craig Kelly
    George Christensen
and the alleged young man in a forthcoming rape trial, who will be tried and tried and tried until he is found guilty, in no small part due to the denunciations of Morrison.

Quite a list isn’t it? So, NO, whilst Labor is playing politics, Morrison also played politics with people’s lives, one went to prison, one may yet go to prison. BOTH MEN INNOCENT.

So, my final words to Morrison, you reap what you sow.

  3. Not Trampis says:

    Franklin has no idea.
A party should never bee in power after two terms.

you vote for the Opposition no matter who leads them.
Abbott is a great example. Everyone knew he would be a failure as PM. He only won because the ALP thought they could fight amongst themselves and still win. Arrogant and wrong.
Rather than l ose the next election they rightly replaced him.

Opposition gives you the time to think through what policies you should have. Few parties are doing this.

  4. I left the Liberal Party more than 20 years ago in utter disgust. The two things that caused me to leave were Michael Kroger’s behaviour and the increasing presence of so-called moderates.

  5. Franx says:

Whatever the extent of the failures of Victorian opposition parties, the ongoing worry is the mindset of Victorians themselves. Labor gained four members in the Legislative Council while the Liberals lost four – as did the Greens, so it might be that there were no real worries about climate, then, but approval of dictatorship. As for the three independents who sold out in support of Labor’s thuggish emergency powers during the covid psychodemic: they are back.

Still demonstrating for all to see that your knowledge of politics is as defective as your knowledge of electricity generation and distribution.

Because Turdballs did so well, that he had to rely on the Nationals winning an unexpected seat to survive?

  7. Old Lefty says:

Franklin is spot on – thanks for the link. There will, of course, have to be a fiscal reckoning once Andrews has dragged Victoria down to Greek and Venezuelan debt levels. But I can’t see a Kennett in the wings yet.

I am not letting myself get too excited yet, but there may be a silver lining: there is a fair chance, so I hear, that the DLP (in the unlikely person of Adem Somyurek) may knock off the ghastly Fiona Patten in the upper house.

Is there a more ironically named political party than Patten’s Reason Party?

I agree, OL, she is a horrible person.
    And an Andrews lapdog.
She is certainly no civil libertarian as she describes herself.

  9. Morsie says:

Everything will be ok,that rock ribbed conservative Pesutto is likely to be the leader.
Lovely fellow but as vicious as a dead sheep and into the climate change stuff to appease his daughter in a huge way.
Further oblivion ,if that is possible awaits the Libs.
