  1. NFA says:

    From the Heartening Report

He says he’s been unsuccessful at convincing his Liberal colleagues to support a constitutionally enshrined Voice

  2. Buccaneer says:

What is the bet that Leeser asks for exemption from preselection at the next election? This issue alone would see many members in his area finding another candidate to support. Who has promised him the security to disenfranchise the members in his electorate?

  3. Ed Case says:

Fruits of Dutton’s failure to make a principled case a year ago

He’s also held the Liberal Party together for an extra year.
Leeser says he wants to change Albanese’s wording, but he’ll fall in behind the Labor Party.

  4. Ed Case says:

What is the bet that Leeser asks for exemption from preselection at the next election?
He was on the Ground Floor of The Voice, so if it gets up he’ll be a big part of it and if it doesn’t, his political career is over.

  5. C.L. says:

Noel Pearson directs Nazi slur at the Jewish Leeser…

    Then he folds.

    Lesson: Thuggery works.

  6. a reader says:

I guess this gives space for Senator Price to be the Indigenous affairs shadow minister?

  7. dover_beach says:

    Men without chests.

  8. Buccaneer says:

Leeser has just protected Pearson from any scrutiny, regardless of whether that was intentional, by creating a bigger headline when he resigned from the shadow front bench.

  9. RacerX says:

From the Pearson story CL linked to …

Mr Pearson questioned whether Mr Leeser wants people to wear a tattoo identifying them as Indigenous or “our clothes should be adorned with some kind of badge identifying us as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander”.

Before we tag them first we should have an adult conversation about what is an aboriginal. If this racial group is going to have more rights than everyone else then we need an honest definition without cries of racism.

I think I only have 5% less aboriginal ancestry than many media promoted and high profile aboriginals and I have none.

  10. Nos_Pullum says:

Dover_beach is wrong if the suggestion is that Leeser should not be able to vote according to his conscience – even though he’s given up a pretty plum job and risked his political career for a principled position he holds, not that I agree with that position. If I’ve got that wrong, then sorry.

However, Buccaneer is right that the onus is now on Leeser to prove that he hasn’t just been bullied into resigning and falling into line behind the ALP by over-reaching aboriginal elites. If he can’t show that conclusively then his political aspirations are rightly DOA.

  11. Syd Gal says:

I missed listening to Leeser at the NPC last week but his speech to the media today is on his website. It includes:

The Press Club model achieves three things

    1. First, it affirms the importance of local and regional bodies across our country as was proposed by the Calma-Langton report and supported by the Coalition. Local and regional voices connected into a national voice are the way we can move the dial on the vital challenges so many local communities face.

    2. Second, it achieves constitutional recognition without using symbolic language which is out of keeping with the rest of the Constitution – removing questions and doubts about activist judges.

    3. Third, it leaves the scope and powers of the Voice completely to Parliament rather than turbocharging objections to disputed words in the Constitution. In other words, removing clause two of the proposed constitutional amendment.

I note ABC news radio is not reporting Leeser’s comments on Clause 2 – in relation to representations to Executive Govt – in its reports this afternoon. They are focussing on P Wong, L Burney and T Mayo welcoming Leeser campaigning for Yes. ABC also doesn’t seem to be asking for the Solicitor-General advice. Not sure whether the Independents who campaigned on accountability and transparency in Govt will ask for it?

ABC radio does not appear to be reporting on this Not Guilty verdict today: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-04-11/former-labor-staffer-alexander-matters-not-guilty-of-rape/102208248. But we didn’t hear much about this case compared to the other high profile one.

  12. Ed Case says:

Before we tag them first we should have an adult conversation about what is an aboriginal.
    Anyone can nominate as Aboriginal.
That’s fair enough, though I wouldn’t advise it, since it might be hard to reverse if the wind changes.
If this racial group is going to have more rights than everyone else then we need an honest definition without cries of racism.
    This is a Furphy.
They’ve got the Right to vote in yet another Election that doesn’t matter, which is no Right at all.

  13. Tagu says:

“I believe the time for the Voice has come,” Mr Leeser said at a press conference.

“I believe in local and regional Voices. I believe in a national Voice, drawn from local and regional bodies, and l support the referendum being put this year.

“I believe that [a] Voice can help move the dial on Indigenous education, health, housing, safety and economic development.”

Either that’s a moron saying that, or a liar.

This constitutional amendment seeks to create a Plenary power that will supersede any elected government. And the opinions of the right honourable Leeser will mean nothing, despite his election to Canberra, because he is subservient to the Voicers.

  14. C.L. says:

As the header suggests, IMO this is the inevitable result of messing around with the “details” strategy for 12 months. Last year, Dutton should have begun sensitising the public to the fact that the Liberals oppose a constitutional Voice on principle. He and Littleproud should have done so together and also made clear to their respective teams that they should speak up now or forever hold their peace.

  15. Entropy says:

    Quite so, CL. Carpe Diem.

Or the Diem will Carpe you.

  16. C.L. says:

Andrew Bolt very good on the resignation tonight.

    ■ He scoffed at the canonisation now underway
    ■ Said he should have quit ages ago
    ■ Pointed out that Leesing now admits he’s supporting a vibe
    ■ And that Dutton is reaping the whirlwind of his own ineptitude

  17. Fred says:

Dutton should have come out at the start and said that he supports a colourblind constitution and colourblind laws. Without exception.

  18. Ed Case says:

Perhaps he shoulda, instead he’s taking the opportunity to help Indigenous in remote areas without Minerals on their land.
He’s playing Chess, Albanese is playing dominoes

  19. Old Lefty says:

DUTTON is pursuing a classic political turf war over the Voice, according to the GayBC:

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-04-11/liberal-julian-leeser-quitting-frontbench-voice-referendum/102208492

Quite the opposite. Our newfound statesman Albo has reverted to the scheming factional hack he always was, prizing an opportunity to wedge the Coalition over the national interest or any commitment to consensus.

  20. Old Lefty says:

By the way, Syd Gal, the ABC has now reported on the acquittal of the Labor staffer. After all, Me Too cancelling and prosecution is only ever supposed to apply to nasty conservativeses, Gollum Gollum.

  21. Texas Jack says:

    Let’s see:
Dutton arrived at the position we expected he instinctively would, his leadership intact and – crucially – he was supported by “the overwhelming majority” of his party-room.
He has blunted the obvious risk he faced had he rejected the proposal outright, without the theatre of asking his questions – or at least being seen to soberly consider the detail.
Voice proponents have had their unrealistic expectations flushed and are acting out the usual ad-hominem thuggery.
Utterly useless Liberal moderates are showing their true colours and are now self-purging, allowing Dutton to stabilise Shadow Cabinet in his favour.
Meanwhile, Albanese has been enticed into overreach, permitting the craziest possible Voice formulation to slip down the birth canal straight into Triage.

Chess? Maybe, but whatever the game these are all positives.

  22. Rafiki says:

That Dutton is diminishing the influence of the so-called moderates in the shadow Cabinet is insightful. Will this new balance flow through to pre-selections for the next federal election? I’m not hopeful. The Liberal Party is a slowly disintegrating outfit. If Dutton moves in to issues that really matter to the average punter, he might energise the party and attract younger (under 50) members.

  23. John of Mel says:

Indigenous in remote areas without Minerals on their land.

Can’t those who do have them, share with their brothers and sisters, uncles and aunties, etc.? Aren’t they all “one”? Or when it concerns financial benefits, it’s the survival of the fittest, like it was here before 18th century?

  24. mantaray says:

    Re Dutton’s tactics….Boiled down it’s “give them enough rope…..” .

Ten years on the drug squad…and in the sex offenders unit…..have given him plenty of practice at getting people to make mistakes under questioning.

Leeser is NOT the smartest person in the room. Dutton knew / knows this.

  25. Crusader says:

Rafiki: if you want to see how young people vote, have a look at the seats of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Or even McKellar.

  26. Ed Case says:

Let’s see how they vote after 3 years of being let down by their The Greens rep.

  27. Ed Case says:

Can’t those who do have them, share with their brothers and sisters, uncles and aunties, etc.? Aren’t they all “one”?

    No.
    There’s no Pan Aboriginality
There were maybe 600 distinct Tribes, not unlike Europe.

  28. Lee says:

Rafiki: if you want to see how young people vote, have a look at the seats of Melbourne …

Anyone who would vote for the despicable and divisive Bandt needs to have his or her head read.
