I’ve started asking pro-war friends if they would change their minds if their adult children were conscripted. They usually go silent then as they had not thought of such a consequence. This is the fundamental problem. We are prudent and base our concerns on historical precedents. They are not and have a very limited understanding of history. The whole Ukraine situation has been a revert to colonial era perpetual conflict in Europe, a situation we all had hoped our leaders had moved on from. Putin holds plenty of misconceptions and a goodly part of the blame for the situation. What are our leaders doing to stop the killing and find an enduring solution, well they seem to be throwing fuel on the fire.
Well, Putin has invaded a neighbour. His military has systematically bombed civilians residences, schools and hospitals. His troops have been engaged with a private army that has employed large numbers of people from jail. Russia’s military effort has been very poor in large part because Putin and his cronies stole the military budget. There have been very large numbers of instances of attacks on civilians by Russian military. Putin has murdered and jailed people who oppose him politically. Putin has implied the use of nuclear weapons. On the other hand, Ukraine elected a government. The government sought, but failed, to join the EU. Ukraine did not join NATO and its people previously did not like the idea. As a result of invasion, two Russian neighbours – Finland and Sweden – both previously uninterested, joined NATO.
