What’s the difference between a Russian Oligarch and an EU/NATO Oligarch?

  3. NFA says:

    Re Mearsheimer’s essay,

If NATO achieve their goal of breaking up Russia into its constituent states then surely there is no longer any need for NATO to continue once that is achieved!

    and from same article

A recent article in The Washington Post, captures how the West treats Russia as an existential threat: “Leaders of the more than 50 other countries backing Ukraine have couched their support as part of an apocalyptic battle for the future of democracy and the international rule of law against autocracy and aggression that the West cannot afford to lose.”

I wonder what the ‘plebs’ in those ’50 other countries’ think about their futures whilst their leaders are ‘all for war’?

Gemma loved watching Boony so much she forgot how to dork his name. As for the rest of this CL, are you having a bad hair day? I noted particularly the Putin defence team at work, yet again plugging his defences – even as he seems to be wrecking them all on Hu’s own. I’d also note that none of the outlaws has in fact been outlawed. Rather there are some perfectly open processes of law – in Trumps case in front of judges he appointed. Surely CL is not a secret agent of State control?

    Q. Why have 8 million Ukrainians left their own country?

    Q. Did Putin kidnap all of them do you think?

  7. NFA says:

    again with the Mearsheimer,

The source of the problem is what happened in the negotiations over the 2015 Minsk II Agreement, which was a framework for shutting down the conflict in the Donbass. French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel played the central role is designing that framework, although they consulted extensively with both Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. Those four individuals were also the key players in the subsequent negotiations. There is little doubt that Putin was committed to making Minsk work. But Hollande, Merkel, and Poroshenko – as well as Zelensky – have all made it clear that they were not interested in implementing Minsk, but instead saw it as an opportunity to buy time for Ukraine to build up its military so that it could deal with the insurrection in the Donbass. As Merkel told Die Zeit, it was “an attempt to give Ukraine time … to become stronger.”55
Similarly, Poroshenko said, “Our goal was to, first, stop the threat, or at least to delay the war — to secure eight years to restore economic growth and create powerful armed forces.”56

Shortly after Merkel’s Die Zeit interview in December 2022, Putin told a press conference: “I thought the other participants of this agreement were at least honest, but no, it turns out they were also lying to us and only wanted to pump Ukraine with weapons and get it prepared for a military conflict.” He went on to say that getting bamboozled by the West had caused him to pass up an opportunity to solve the Ukraine problem in more favorable circumstances for Russia: “Apparently, we got our bearings too late, to be honest. Maybe we should have started all this [the military operation] earlier, but we just hoped that we would be able to solve it within the framework of the Minsk agreements.” He then made it clear that the West’s duplicity would complicate future negotiations: “Trust is already almost at zero, but after such statements, how can we possibly negotiate? About what? Can we make any agreements with anybody and where are the guarantees?”57

In sum, there is hardly any chance the Ukraine war will end with a meaningful peace settlement. The war is instead likely to drag on for at least another year and eventually turn into a frozen conflict that might turn back into a shooting war.

The cricket. Lotsa woke wankers in the Oz team. I can see what Gemma’s on about…

It all leaves me kinda conflicted: hoping the wanksters underperform because of their mental confusion, but also hoping they flog the dastardly Poms. Also the dastardly South Effricans; the dastardly curry-munchers; the Blokes from across the Detch, the Calypso Kings (though not so much) and the others. I’m conflicted.

But donI detect an undertone of the ABC salivating about the opportunity for increased granny-killing (aka voluntary assisted dying)? For the same reason, I don’t expect the current regime of Mr 31% in Canberra to try very hard to find a solution.

Meanwhile, the ABC sermon this morning tells us how an immigrant had the great blessing of learning to use a condom in their ever so enlightened Australia.

Cassie: my remarks are often a reaction to blatant boosting of Putin propaganda. Rarely are there facts to dispute. Usually a persistent line of argument that justifies a brutal assault on civilians by a truly nasty criminal regime.
I also react to sectarianism and divisive opinion and bigotry.
Those who fancy a culture based on 12th century Catholicism are bound to be angry. Cassie seems to be cranky because there’s too many lefties in Dover Heights.

  21. jupes says:

Contrary to her assertion, Crompvoets exposed precisely zero war crimes. Her claim that SAS soldiers slit the throats of two 14 yr old boys was so outrageous that even the gullible and vindictive Brereton would have nothing to do with it.

She has been paid over $5mil taxpayer dollars via the ADF to write reports about diversity and such, but the most disgraceful was the Special Operations Commander hired her to write a report on the culture of SASR and 2 Commando. Why MAJGEN Jeff Sengelman would hire a feminist academic to that is totally beyond me. Her ridiculous report was the impetus for Brereton and thus the emasculation of the two best combat units in the army. Sengelman’s role in this disgraceful episode should not be forgotten.

  22. Entropy says:

Nix, please point to a post you’ve made that actually quotes facts.

  25. Rockdoctor says:

Crompvoets got the schadenfreude she deserved. Problem is this bint will probably fall on her paws with the present administration in Canberra.

As for Sengelman he obviously got his wish jumping into the lucrative defence sector from staff. His CV on paper looks to be fair and through no fault of his own a mostly a peacetime career. He was at staff level when the real kinetic action kicked off in the middle east so would have been another shiny bum in Dubai.

  26. Old Lefty says:

How Crompvoets has ended up with her car being repossessed after pocketing $5m in consultancy fees is beyond me. Even after deducting expenses, she should have had enough to set her up for life.

Can she identify her financial adviser so that the rest of us can avoid him/her/them?

  27. Old Lefty says:

Another example of woke hypocrisy, by the way. Public servants good, consultants bad – except for Dr Crompvoets.

After reading / seeing that Russian blew up it’s own pipeline instead of shutting it down: that Russia blew up a dam it 100% controls, to flood the ethnic-Russian territory it also controls, instead of opening the dam spill-gates: that Tony Abbott and hundreds of others were strolling about in Kiev without any security whatsoever etc etc, I’m kinda conflicted on the veracity of everything I see / read about this subject.

BTW: The past three years of non-stop BS on the Covid situation has got you this willing to believe the MSM on any subject for what reason?

Civil war or clashes between various sections of the left has only just begun, but long may it continue until it collapses under its own massive inconsistencies.

Another recent example was the Muslim mayor in the UK who went to a local gay pride parade, was criticised by his co-religionists for it, which he then apologised for, but then he was fiercely condemned from the left for apologising for attending the gay event.

  33. Buccaneer says:

  34. NFA says:

A Black Pastor Speaks Truth to Power in Berkeley

Question: What’s the closest thing to Hell freezing over? Answer: a black pastor praising western civilization for “bringing Africa out of the darkness” in front of a Catholic congregation in Berkeley, California. Even more amazing, this was no ordinary congregation. It was the Newman Center; the church that is the official designated home of the U.C. Berkeley Catholic community, and one where a former Chancellor of the entire 10 campus U.C. system was in the audience along with a substantial contingent of faculty, administrators and alumni. In short, a representative sampling of the people who made and make ‘Berkeley’ synonymous with the far left, and ones who are very much used to living – whether at church or on campus — in a very comfortable echo chamber.

So, when Father Joseph Ekpo, visiting from Nigeria, uttered those sentiments as an introduction to his after-gospel homily, the collective eyebrows raised among that vanguard elite were likely strong enough to levitate the roof several feet.
