  1. Perplexed of Brisbane says:

Saves time. We just know instinctively.

  2. Dr Faustus says:

AFP took the lead in the response but NSW Police were also deployed to the scene.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb told 2GB authorities responded reasonably given the nature of the incident.

“I praise the crew for what they did in keeping the passengers calm … to de-escalate the situation to the point that we got this matter resolved in three hours, I think three hours is pretty good.

Not instantly clear what the AFP were doing in their leadership role during those three hours – but possibly something pretty good.

NSW Premier Chris Minns told Nine he could understand why people wanted to ask questions about the AFP response and a review would be conducted.

    Or not.

  3. Franx says:

Reporting here is indeed most circumspect, forgiving, even: ‘allegedly claiming’ when there is no doubt that he actually made the claim. As to whether the contents of the claim were true is another matter. Likewise with ‘false threat’.

  4. C.L. says:

I guess ASIO was too busy monitoring the Grampian ‘Nazis’ to work up a file on this bloke – who has Man Monis written all over him.

  5. Ragu Namatjira says:

Probably just cranky his comfort goat got put in cargo

  6. Old Lefty says:

How long before we have Louise Milligan telling us it was a false flag operation planned by George Pell?

  7. Old Lefty says:

Remember the presumption of innocence, Franx. Unless you’re Fatty Ashton, Louise Milligan or Brittany Higgins and her media claque, you are, strictly speaking, supposed to say ‘allegedly’ and ‘alleged victim’ until the accused is convicted.

  8. Perplexed of Brisbane says:

And TAG East would have been only a short chopper flight away.

I’m actually not surprised at the reticence of authorities. If you check out who is doing airport security, I wouldn’t be surprised if they let a brother through with a package one day.

  9. Franx says:

True, Old Lefty, and agreed about ‘allegedly’ and the presumption of innocence. What intrigued me in this instance was that uncertainty about criminality would not be in whether or not the claim as such was made but in the intentionality of the claim. I also wondered about ‘false threat’ since a threat as performative utterance cannot be ‘false’, although its intentionality contents could be false. Not sure that ‘claim’ is as performative a word as is ‘threat’. But yes and essentially what is marked is the difference in sensitivity here in the reporting from that which was and is accorded to many others.

  10. Bruce of Newcastle says:

Watch out for all those crazed ABBA fans.

‘High degree of caution’: Aussies hit with major Europe travel alert (Sky mainpage headline, 15 Aug)

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is warning holidaymakers planning on visiting Sweden to “exercise a high degree of caution” over concerns about a heightened risk of terrorism.

Surely the danger is fanatical IKEA customers irate about Australians’ inability to properly use an allen key.

  11. jupes says:

If you check out who is doing airport security

Australia’s response to an Islamic terror threat was to employ Islamic security guards.
    Too stupid to survive.

  12. jupes says:

I’m also amazed that no passengers took the terrorist down. What is wrong with the men of today? And what about the air marshal?

  13. cuckoo says:

I knew as soon as I saw the phone video on last night’s news: man of middle eastern appearance. No doubt innocent muslims are already cowering in anticipation of tomorrow’s backlash.

  14. Old Lefty says:

The ABC has, by contrast, plastered ‘Catholic priest’ all over its report about Gerald Ridsdale’s latest sentencing and has resurrected the photo of Pell accompanying him to court. Quelle surprise, as Hendo would say.

  15. Lee says:

No doubt that had he quoted biblical scripture, the ABC would have made no bones about him being a “far-right Christian extremist” or some such thing.

  16. Jannie says:

If there is random violence with a bottle in a city park, or “youths” killing a pedestrian with a stolen car, you know the identity of the perps.

In the case of explosives, when police are mystified as to the motive of the bomb carrier, you know the identity of the perps.

In every case white people are held to be responsible.

  17. Dr Faustus says:

The ABC has, by contrast, plastered ‘Catholic priest’ all over its report about Gerald Ridsdale’s latest sentencing and has resurrected the photo of Pell accompanying him to court. Quelle surprise, as Hendo would say.

Also managed to quote the magistrate’s comment:

“The church cannot escape criticism in face of its lack of action … and constant moving of you from parish to parish.”

    News as commentary.

  18. Riversutra says:

If the Qantas Man Monis had meant trouble, I suppose the AFP would have waited another 3hrs before acting in accordance with the Lindt Cafe protocols.
If ever in a situation like this, for the love of God (not that one!!) , save yourself.
Don’t be another sheep waiting for “the authorities” to do something and save you.
Not going to happen. You are at the very bottom of the to do list.

  19. cuckoo says:

If there is random violence with a bottle in a city park, or “youths” killing a pedestrian with a stolen car, you know the identity of the perps.

If it involves machetes, you know the identity of the perps.
If it involves a home invasion, of an Indian household, to steal a luxury car, you definitely know the identity of the perps.

  20. SydGal says:

Old Lefty- I always wondered why the RC Chair went to visit Ridsdale in prison before Ridsdale gave evidence by video link at the RC in May 2015.

Seemed to be the time the Cardinal Pell complainants came forward.

From memory reading the RC transcripts on the website, I think Ridsdale said his lawyer was trying to find someone to accompany him. They asked other priests but no one turned up. I think Cardinal Pell was asked to do it.

  21. Cassie of Sydney says:

“I’m also amazed that no passengers took the terrorist down. What is wrong with the men of today? And what about the air marshal?”

I don’t think he would have lasted long on an El Al flight.

  22. C.L. says:

I think Cardinal Pell was asked to do it.

His lawyer asked him to do it. He told the RC he also saw it as a Christian duty because Ridsdale was a man “at the bottom of the pile” in this life.

  23. Lee says:

I’m also amazed that no passengers took the terrorist down. What is wrong with the men of today?

Easier and safer to do nothing rather than have the overzealous law down on you like a ton of bricks, for doing the right thing.

Men have been told for years now that they can’t behave like men.

  24. Rockdoctor says:

Fed jurisdiction Airports so if the NSW plod were told to wait out then good. If anyone thought Baird’s response all over the shop with Lindt, could you imagine how Minns and Labor would fare with something like this?

  25. Rockdoctor says:

Jupes IMO too much water under the bridge between Sept 11 and now. 22 years in fact. We’ve become complacent again.

I remember a few incidents where passengers took down & restrained isolated fruitcakes in the preceding years from 9-11 and nil was said by airlines of the plod. Not so recently.

  26. Old School Conservative says:

He (Minns) said airport screening was “really strong”

    Agreed.
All grandmas are thoughougly patted down to ensure they have no Glocks on them.
Knitting needles are quickly consigned to the bin.
“Random” searches are conducted on anyone looking like a WASP.
    Yep – really strong.

  27. Mantaray says:

Cassie (4.39pm) I used to fly Athens-Tel Aviv, and once in a while Berlin-Tel Aviv with El Al. You are correct that you did feel “more secure” knowing security at airport check-ins AND onboard was not being outsourced to Lebanese-run companies!

BTW: Here’s a former associate I stayed with on occasion. You may have heard of him….and The Valley of Tears….Avi Kahalani….https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avigdor_Kahalani.

  28. cuckoo says:

Too bad there wasn’t an off-duty policewoman on board. You know, the five-foot-nothing 90-pounders who can wrestle a hulking skinhead to the ground without smudging their makeup? I see them do it all the time in tv shows and Vicpol recruiting ads.
