Losers Immortalised

There are plenty there celebrating our male sporting champions. It’s time we celebrated women as well. You deserve your place amongst the greatest.”

– Being rendered in bronze was hitherto restricted to champions

This is freaking absurd . . . they finished 4th and were well beaten in their last 2 games.

Played 7 won 3, drew 1 (won on a penalty shoot out) and lost 3.

IMO an insult to real sporting achievements.

Go Anna was buzzing at the event yesterday. Sounded as though she was going to throw in some steak knives as well.

  3. Entropy says:

If everyone is special, no one is.

  4. Entropy says:

That is the point of course.

  5. Christine says:

    ‘GoAnna’ suits her.
Will all came-fourths form part of this enormous statue?

  6. C.L. says:

Wally Lewis had to register countless victories and sustain multiple brain injuries over a decade to earn a plinth.

  7. Morsie says:

I am sure they would have won if it wasn’t for sexism racism bigotry lack of funding white supremacy etc eyc.

  8. Wally Dalí says:

Statue of never-bettered champion Margaret Court on the drawing board anywhere? It won’t be able to speak, if that will make any difference to the hosts…

  9. NFA says:

Seems a fitting tribute to Annastacia Palaszczuk and the communist gang she fronts in Qld.

Where will the bronze be imported from and what impact on Climate Boiling will this have to their dire emergencies?

Be better to have a windmill/s with an effigy of each player strapped to the blade to represent ‘the spin’.

  10. cuckoo says:

AFLW player Tayla Harris has her own bronze statue outside Marvel Stadium, for no better reason than that the papers published a photo of her doing a high kick. One that threatened, as a wag put it at the time (possibly on this blog), to display the ‘full ham sandwich’. Given the abysmal standard of monumental sculpture at the present day – especially sporting monuments – this doesn’t count as an honour.

  11. Petros says:

Awesome. About time we had a statue honouring the 2016 North Queensland Cowboys. They also came fourth.

  12. and says:

    In that hour of greatness,
the Matildos came forth… and came fourth.

  13. NFA says:

Viewers call for subsidies and payments to watch farcical sport.

  14. Cassie of Sydney says:

“Annastacia Palaszczuk plans to honour the Matildas’ heroics with a statue outside Lang Park.”

So I now await the brave David Crisafulli and the QLD LNP to step up and say NO to this ridiculous idea. You know, just like the Victoria Liberals, back in October last year, prior to the Victoria state election, said NO to Dan Xi Man’s offer of big bucks to Netball Australia. Oh wait……………..

Don’t worry, I’m not holding my breath

  16. Charles D says:

It’s reassuring to know that I am not the only one with a low opinion of women’s soccer. In the knockout stage, the Australians scored a grand total of one goal in five hours of play, and they are treated like national heroes. Even the men’s game doesn’t get as dull as that.

  17. and says:

He refers to lespiantics as “people of the alphabets”. 🙂

Muslim preacher warns it’s ‘haram’ to watch the Matildas.

  18. jupes says:

“We’ve seen the impact that women’s sport has had on the Australian sporting landscape, thanks to the Matildas,” the statement reads.

“It’s time for the chairman, board, and CEO to prioritise the future of Australian women’s rugby and allocate adequate resources. The future of our games hangs in the balance. It’s your move, Rugby Australia.”

In a rational world Rugby Australia’s answer would be: “Yeah, nah … you already get more than you’re worth.”

  19. and says:

Clear the way… bandwagon coming through.

AFL and AFLW prizemoney: What will the players get paid in 2023?

The AFL has made the historic decision to have equal prizemoney for players across the AFLW and AFL competitions in 2023.

An announcement was made by the governing body in the wake of the Women’s World Cup which saw the Matildas unite the nation in finishing fourth.

    ◉_◉

    Let’s correct that:

The AFL has made the historic decision to force male AFL players to subsidise AFLW players in 2023.

  21. cuckoo says:

If you think getting a statue is an honour, remember, Australia is a country where a scummy little pimp like Al Grassby gets a statue.

  22. jupes says:

The AFL has made the historic decision to force male AFL players to subsidise AFLW players in 2023.

    They need a new union.

  23. Jannie says:

Wallaroos unite to demand fair treatment from Rugby Australia.

Yes they should be paid the same rate as the men. Or more to make up for 65000 years or unequal pay. That will make rugby a much better game, and more people will watch it. But even if it doesn’t the government should pay for their salaries. And bonuses. And any woman who comes fourth in an international race is a champion who deserves a statue. It’s so much harder for women so they deserve more.

Who cares, in 25 years they will not be allowed to play any sport without a jump suit and a full burka.

  24. A reader says:

Meanwhile, Emma McKeon, Australia’s most successful female athlete, doesn’t even get a library named after her.

  25. Eyrie says:

    Celebrating failure since Federation.
    Straya!

  26. Shy Ted says:

Taxpayers money to the sculptor. Taxpayers money to the unions for the installation. More money laundering and wealth transfer.

  27. Fred says:

They should put up a statute for the Newcastle Jets under 15 boys team. They are better than the Matildas.

  28. RacerX says:

They should put up a statute for the Newcastle Jets under 15 boys team. They are better than the Matildas.

If they work hard those boys may one day have the opportunity to play for the Matildas.

  29. Pat Mac says:

I HATE that the MSM arseholes keep lying that “the qld govt will pay for this crap.”

    WE, THE TAXPAYERS WILL PAY.

    FMD and them too.

  30. C.L. says:

    On the broader subject…

It has always struck me as crass to erect a statue to honour a still living person and proof an honouree doesn’t deserve one if he happily goes along.
