These revelations come as no surprise to those of us who know about operation paperclip, the Ustasa who were supported in Australia, and the numerous other Axis participants who were allowed to emigrate to the Anglosphere after WWII. One could make an argument to grab the top scientists but the rest brought no real benefits. Most of them just kept their heads down here and hoped no one ever outed them. The pandemic has shown that we have plenty of enthusiastic locals willing to act as camp guards. No need to import them.
Petros, many of those post WWII emigres from areas politically aligned to Axis groups were fleeing communism – and various other forms of injustice and poverty, as did many from Italy. Their nationality alone did not make them either suspect or undesirable; and rather than making a ‘grab for top scientists’, this country was generous in accepting them not only for purposes of developing the place but also to provide hope.
