Police tell Jewish community to avoid Sydney tribute

NSW Police have warned Sydney’s Jewish community from attending the CBD on Monday evening for the lighting of the Sydney Opera House’s sails over safety concerns.

It comes with a condemned pro-Palestine rally taking place on Monday evening before the lighting of the sails with the Israeli flag, although the Jewish community have since been urged to stay at home.

“NSW police are urging the community not to attend the Sydney Opera House or Town Hall this evening,” an email from the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies to members said.

“Community members already in the CBD should be vigilant as protesters are likely to seek to march from Town Hall to the Sydney Opera House.

“The events tonight may pose a risk to the safety of community members and you are strongly urged not to attend.”

The board have been in contact with NSW Police throughout the day and it is understood the new advice came from assistant Police Commissioner Tony Cooke.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Ossip said it was disturbing and concerning to know the community were not safe in their own city.

“It is a very sad state of affairs when security concerns mean that the Jewish community is not safe to go to certain parts of the Sydney CBD,” Mr Ossip said.

Earlier on Monday, the Prime Minister condemned the pro-Palestine rally in Sydney’s CBD on Monday night as Australia’s Jewish organisations condemned both the Greens for their support and those planning to attend.

“I support people’s right to demonstrate their views, we’re a democratic nation,” Mr Albanese said.

“But I would counsel what is to be served apart from really just creating a climate that is not conducive to peace and to the objectives of wanting to see Palestinians and Israelis living a peaceful and secure life would not advance it at all.”

The Australian Jewish Association and the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies slammed the state Greens for supporting the pro-Palestine rally in Sydney’s CBD, with one of the groups saying they were “backing terror”.

The organising group said it would be a “mass, peaceful protest”.

Utterly disgusting. What have we become?

It’s not just Labor C.L., the Libs allowed and encouraged Muslim immigration too. You could say they started it.

  3. NFA says:

A million immigrants here, a million immigrants there, a million immigrants next year.

Pretty soon Albo will be handing out land to immigrants who come from places unknown.

    Lucky we’re not Sweden eh!

  4. NFA says:

Rising crime statistics are just another miss information.

  5. calli says:

You could say they started it.

As smarter people have said, “I don’t care who started it. Who is going to finish it?”.

    That is the burning question.

  6. Wally Dalí says:

Cut the coppers some slack eh, CL. I mean, they’re tuckered out after being covid compliance gaulieters for a few years, they need a bit of rest of a spring evening.
Plus, if they go out on the beat, they might risk discovering some hate speech, but like, for realsies, not the neat and tidy Marching Bois type.

  8. Perplexed of Brisbane says:

The coppers might have to deal with some roided-up mussies. We can’t have that. They might break a painted fake nail.

Better just beat up on some old grannies instead. Maybe go and drag a pregnant lady out of her home in her pyjamas, in front of her kids. You know, hardened criminals like them.

When it all turns sour and the desk jockeys start wetting themselves, who will they turn to, the SAS they have tried to vilify. Ben Roberts-Smith and his comrades will have to do the dirty work and the shiny bums will be screaming for them to show no mercy…. now.

  9. Megan says:

I’m lost for words. Just as I was when VicPol fired rubber bullets at the protesters’ backs. Something I did not think was possible.

I don’t know my country any more.

I wonder if that [Yassmin Abdel-Magied] trollope would still believe she is part of the most feminine religion after seeing a [raped] woman… paraded for the benefit of the Yay Palestine crowd?

  11. Lee says:

If it was a protest against draconian Covid laws in Melbourne instead of a pro-Palestine rally in Sydney, VicPol couldn’t hoe into the crowds quick enough.

You’d think plod could at least plug their LRAD’s back in for this…

  13. Cassie of Sydney says:

I posted this on Dover’s blog when I arrived home tonight……

I’ve just got home, on the bus I was shaking and crying. When I get stressed, I shake badly. Why? Because tonight I saw Nazis at Town Hall, real Nazis.

I left work just after 5.00 p.m. and I decided to walk to Town Hall to get some groceries (I work down at Circular Quay). I went into Woolworths and bought some eggs, butter and yoghurt. I walked out the George Street door, and saw a massive police presence, and I heard shouting, using a megaphone. I then saw quite a few men and women waving Nazi Palestinian flags walking to that area that separates St Andrew’s Cathedral with the Town Hall. There’s a heavy police presence, all facing at the scum. Apparently a Greens MLA is in attendance, egging on their Jew hatred. I saw a mother and father walking with their children, all waving Nazi Palestinian flags, and those children were wearing Nazi Palestinian martyr garb. I became shocked and bewildered, and I walked up to a young policeman and said is this an anti-Israel protest, he nodded, and I looked at him and I said that the massacre of Israeli Jews on the weekend was the biggest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. He tried not to wince, and then he said to me, quietly, “it’s terrible”. All of this is happening in Sydney tonight as I write. This is the human garbage we’ve brought into this country.

I’ve since learned that tonight in Sydney Jews were advised to stay away from the Sydney Opera House, and that the human scum I saw at Town Hall had walked down to the Opera House, through Sydney streets, screaming “Death to Israel” and “f*ck the Jews“.

Make note of the last three words because therein lies the essence….Jew hatred.

I would add what I saw today here in Sydney, and what has ensued tonight at the Sydney Opera House, has been fomented, stoked, encouraged, and enabled by a despicable progressive media class, particularly scum at their ABC, by various Labor politicians including Sleazy and Burke, and by ALL Greens politicians.

By the way, last nights celebrations were in Lakemba and Greenacre, both suburbs located smack bang in the middle of Tony Burke’s electorate. Anyone heard him denounce and condemn the rabid Jew hatred on display in his electorate last night. I haven’t, all I’ve heard is silence.

Here’s the truth, forget about lily white Grampian Nazis that the likes of Victorian Labor and the media like to latch onto in order to twist their progressive narratives, those Grampian guys are prop Nazis who turn up somewhere at the invitation of Victorian police. Tonight, I saw real Nazis tonight in Sydney’s CBD. I know which Nazis are more real and more frightening.

    The Greens should be deregistered.

I’m actually quite distressed about all of this.

  14. Lee says:

Does anyone know which Greens utterly disgraced themselves and turned up at the anti-Semite hate fest?

  15. C.L. says:

I will be praying for you tonight, Cassie.

Yes, C.L. He is in charge.

    Thank you.

  18. Franx says:

A disservice to the integrity of a cause is done when an adversary or enemy is spoken of as less than human or their flags are falsely called nazi flags. (I say falsely because I assume that nazi flag bearers would be arrested.) The times and the issues are testing.

  20. C.L. says:

    Simon Benson in The Australian:

It is almost beyond belief that Jewish residents of Sydney have been told to stay in their homes because the police can’t guarantee their safety.

This is nothing short of a disgrace. And the NSW police Minister Yasmin Catley should resign for allowing this to happen.

There is almost no equivalent for the appalling lack of judgment by the NSW police to allow a pro-Palestinian march on the CBD, knowing members of the Jewish community might want to attend the Opera House.

This has denied the Jewish community the right to join in solidarity over the murder of their people in favour of a protest that seeks to celebrate it. Presumably the protest will have a police escort.

With all the instruments of State, it is equally implausible that the NSW police can’t keep the Jewish community safe.

And it could have easily been resolved.

Catley must bear ultimate responsibility for this decision – one which flies in the face of the decision of her Premier Chris Minns to light up the Opera House in the first place as a mark of respect to the Jewish community.

And it is one the minister will come to regret.

One can only imagine the shock from Jewish leaders when told by police that they should urge people to stay at home.

They will be justifiably outraged and should be demanding of an explanation from the NSW government and the NSW police.

  21. C.L. says:

Who is Yasmin Catley? I had to check:

Formerly a librarian with the Lake Macquarie City Council, she has worked in the offices of Federal Labor MPs Greg Combet and Anthony Albanese. She is married to Robert Coombs who himself served as the member for Swansea from 2007 to 2011.

    I kid you not.

  27. Petros says:

When they get to near fifty percent of the population, we get Mogadishu. Consequences, people. What’s Dreyfus got to say? A cannot fathom the logic of the self hating Jews. What do they think will happen to Israel? Everyone play nice?

  28. Buccaneer says:

The left and the islamists share in a total lack of shame, the vision of the young woman being paraded around in the back of the truck at best unconscious, should have been a wake up call to suggest to people who might have sympathy with Hamas that there is something seriously wrong here. That doesn’t seem to have been the case. The whole thing is brutal and truly we should not be shocked given the toxic impact of the Biden regime across the globe, they’ve given succour to every miscreant across the globe, the extreme elements were always going to take advantage while they could.

  29. Megan says:

Our prayers are for you and all of Israel, dear Cassie. Be strong and know that God will provide.

I am deeply ashamed of what you had to endure in Sydney last night.

  30. Old School Conservative says:

On a similar but relatively minor note, a drunken homeless man walked into my church on Sunday, strode aggressively down the aisle in a church full of worshipers, sat in the from pew with loud utterances while the sermon was being preached – then turned around and put on a halloweeen mask to mock all and sundry.
He was treated with quiet respect, gentle speech, and welcoming gestures.

Perhaps the Jew-banning and Sunday’s quiet response are not far from each other, because both actions facilitate anti-Judeo Christian behaviour.

It seems that muscular Christianity needs a revival.
    Onward Christian Soldiers.

  31. Christine says:

I’m not waiting to hear what Dreyfus has to say.

Some say there are good people among the many followers of Islam.
But they remain silent; so I don’t know who they are.
It would be good to hear from them.

The despicable prime minister hasn’t been silent. In his reckless bid to change Australia, he linked Muslims with Aboriginal people.

  32. Franx says:

To allege or to point out that violence and aggression and injustice has been committed by either Hamas or Israel ought not be reduced to reactions claiming, respectively, islamophobia or antisemitism. For either side in this country to so claim is to play the victim card which, for one thing, obfuscates arriving at truth and the realities in desperate need of resolution while also adding momentum to back room deals amongst purveyors of endless wars.

  33. Buccaneer says:

A few nazis turn up at rallies the left disagrees with, ban Nazi Flags etc. a couple of thousand people turn up yelling gas or kill the jews from a constituent the left regards as a reliable vote herd. It’s understandable or blame someone else.

    despicable

  34. jupes says:

Faruqi hates Australia so much, what is she still doing here?

Using the weaknesses in our system to destroy it from within. She and her ilk are making a good job of it too.

  35. Riversutra says:

On X under hashtag #ProtectedSpecies, you can see the police arrest one guy for breach of peace for waving an Israeli flag , while his mate filming says “but there are hundreds of flags”.
