The EU’s top diplomat wastes no time issuing a formal censure

Not much is lower than a Spanish socialist: Israel is acting against international law, says Borrell.

EU diplomat’s ‘appalling’ Israel attack proves Brexiteers were right, rages Lee Anderson (11 Oct)

Conservative Deputy Chairman Lee Anderson warned that this could see the UK supporting “appalling” comments and policies such as the one made by Borrell and he challenged Labour to condemn him.

Mr Anderson told Express.co.uk: “We didn’t need any more reasons to be glad we left the EU, but their top diplomat has just given us another one.

Spain was none too kind on the Catalans who wanted a peaceful vote on independence … I seem to remember the Spanish sent troops quick smart to kick a few heads and ensure they weren’t allowed to even think about independence.

The EU just sat there and nodded along at the time.

Funny the way these highly principled people are also highly selective in their condemnation.

It’s weird stuff this “International Law (TM)” because as far as I know, there’s never been any vote on what actually goes into that … and people making claims about “International Law” don’t cite specific statutes. You would almost think they make it up as they go along.

  3. Roger W says:

You are right, Tel, in assuming they essentially make it up as they go along. See the Wikipedia entry for a good summary.

  5. Fyodor says:

    He’s correct, though.

Terrorist atrocities committed by Hamas against innocent Israeli civilians are indefensible. The deliberate targeting and mass-murder of innocent Palestinian civilians by the IDF is likewise indefensible. One doesn’t justify the other.

From a pragmatic perspective, it’s also unwise – but politically inevitable, for the obvious reasons – for the Israelis to react disproportionately, as Hamas surely expected, planned and goaded them to.

    Correct.
The IDF is refusing to confirm the ’40 beheaded babies’ story and the White House has walked back Joe Biden’s claim to hav e ‘seen the pics’, so this one is looking more like a ‘Kuwaiti premmie incubators/Germans using Belgian babies for bayonet practice’
Atrocity Story made up by media hacks.

  7. C.L. says:

Please do not start again on the “40 beheaded babies”. Nobody said any such thing. One journalist quoted one officer to the effect that as many as 40 babies had been killed, some beheaded. The journalist was at a massacre site at the time.

Hamas slaughtered babies, burned them alive, tied children together and killed them and bashed others to death in their cribs and beds. This is confirmed by the IDF and is a historical fact.

The species of fake news that maliciously quibbles about coronial minutiae to deny the overarching truth is classical Paliwood-leftist misdirection.

The deliberate targeting and mass-murder of innocent Palestinian civilians

There is no evidence that Israeli officials held meetings and then ordered the mass-murder of civilians. When terrorists hide in buildings and store weapons caches in hospitals (as they do), those buildings are going to be razed. The Israelis have no moral obligation to lose another couple of thousand soldiers conducting door-to-doors in a booby-trapped Gaza.

As for the argument that Hamas is delighted about the bombing and will use it to recruit more members, that’s a redundant behaviour cycle (putative). Clearly, they have no problem finding “innocent” Gazans by the truckload to kill Jews anyway.

As Struth said, “and just like that the communists are worried about how many dead babies there are and the manner of their death”!

  10. Entropy says:

That Israel is compelled to actually show the pics is depressing.

  11. C.L. says:

They learned from General Eisenhower who, foreseeing denialism about atrocities that “beggared description,” in 1945 ordered that concentration camps be meticulously photographed and filmed.

    Exactly.
The IDF are in fact warning Gazans directly by telephone and indirectly via social media to evacuate hamas sites that are going to be bombed.

Whole residential apartment buildings have been deliberately levelled by airstrikes, with little evidence presented that militants are using them operationally. That level of indiscriminate collateral damage can’t be excused or rationalised away.

Sure, one can make the pragmatic argument that it’s safer – for the Israelis – to destroy whole buildings than risk IDF soldiers in extremely dangerous urban combat, but the risk to innocent civilians is too extreme to be conscionable.

There’s nothing new about this, either. We’ve just become inured to the IDF causing excessive collateral damage in their reprisals.

I know you know how terrorism works. There’s no shortage of innocent people killed on both sides.
