I do know that Australia’s net contribution in CO2 emissions is minute compared to other countries.
Sure, but wha t if higher CO2 isn’t a problem, but lower CO2 is?
I read that during the Carboniferous Period, CO2 levels were 20X higher, and that CO2 may be more critical to life than O2.
Anyway, I also read that breathing into a paper bag for a minute nor 2 is one way to increase cellular CO2 and decrease blood pressure, so I tried it out this morning.
    B/P yesterday at 11.52am – 110/73; today after paper bagging at 11.07 – 91/64.

Philippa mentions Rachel Carson’s “silent spring”

When is Rachel Carson going to be added to the famous mass murderers of the 20th Century – what’s her score now… 60 million plus??

  3. Ed Case says:

Carson was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and a lesbian, who later expressed regret that she had been duped into exaggerating the impact of agricultural chemicals on the environment at the time.
Fast forward 60 years, it’s Spring, yeah, there’s still a few birds around, but where did the beetles and all the other insects go?

    Hi Tony.
    Probably never, see below.

A worldwide ban on agricultural use was formalized under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, which has been in effect since 2004. Recognizing that total elimination in many malaria-prone countries is currently unfeasible in the absence of affordable/effective alternatives for disease control, the convention exempts public health use within World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines from the ban.

    Source:
The first I read of the millions killed by the DDT Ban was at the Lew Rockwell.com site about 2010, but the Wiki link above indicates that DDT use wasn’t banned in 3rd World Countries for Malaria eradication.
The link does say that it’s effectiveness declined over time.

But what about the elderly and disabled? They can’t just hop on a bike and ride two hours through insane traffic to their frequent hospital appointments.

That was exactly the point about truly mad Green schemes like this that I was making to a friend last week.

Even as a child I was incapable of riding a bicycle due to a poor sense of balance, I am no longer young, have a wonky knee, and not close to shops, public transport or conveniences.

My car is literally my lifeblood.

That may be so, but was it available to purchase??

  7. Ed Case says:

Not by you or me, but what the WHO wants, it gets, and since the WHO was the only customer …?
The link does say that DDTs effectiveness in Malaria Eradication declined over time, so I’m giving the old gal a pass on this one either way.
Basically, she got involved in Left Wing politics, served her purpose and was discarded while dying of cancer.
It’s a sad story, still happening somewhere.

  8. John Brumble says:

    Don’t be silly, Lee.

That’s what euthanasia is for: plebs who don’t have enough money to pay someone else to do it. Older people are more likely to not vote for them anyway.

  9. Buccaneer says:

Don’t tell the euthanasia crowd about that paper bag Ed, they might get ideas.

I thought they preferred plastic bags…

I just Love the way Philippa Martyr can fillet the progressive ‘whales’.

    Argentinia for the win.

  13. Rossini says:

“I wish we had rubbish incineration plants like Switzerland, a blissfully clean country that simply burns everything and generates electricity from it.”

You don’t get out much do you?

Australia sure ain’t running out of insects.

  15. cuckoo says:

Someone living in the outer suburbs who has a job involving going from house to house—like a domestic cleaner or a support worker—can’t take public transport or a bike to do their job. They also can’t afford to buy an electric car.

Reminds me of the time Age journalist Shaun Carney had to move to an outer suburb for some reason. He then wrote a column about his Damascus moment of realizing that, dammit, you actually need a car if you live in these places. It was not well received.

  16. A reader says:

I’ve got heaps of Christmas Beetles around here in SW Sydney. The insects haven’t gone away. Flies are worse this year than in ages
