In the Great Depression in the US, they were called Hoovervilles

An ABC report on encampments of the homeless – I dub them Albovilles – doesn’t name the PM.

Look on the bright side – they don’t have to worry about assaults from the MENA ïmmigrants” – they would all be in tax-payer funded houses/hotels etc.

  2. Lee says:

Our ridiculously high immigration rates are not helping.

The Uniparty, corporations, and big business absolutely love the immigration Ponzi scheme, but eventually it will collapse under its own weight, and not just the critical lack of housing.

  3. Fred says:

These 900,000 new migrants have to live somewhere. You can’t expect them to live in the bush!

  4. Ed Case says:

Called Happy Valleys in Australia from the Depression thru to the late Forties when Government started building houses again.
Those people need to cooperate rather than exist one out, and tell Local Council jobsworths to go away, but that Australia ceased to exist a long time ago.

  5. Lee says:

I think Canberra ought to be renamed Hooterville, after the utterly surreal small mid-West country town in the TV sitcom, Green Acres.

  6. NFA says:

If their abc are now promoting what has been going on for some time then expect a majorly increase in funding for 15 minute pod cities.

I would think the kids growing up in the bush camps will be loving it.

I notice the propagandists who penned this ‘walkley’ story managed to warn of boiling bush danger as well.

But its not just the bush C.L.

People are camping in tents and living in cars in and around all Australian cities and towns.

They ‘aint just grey nomads nowadays.

Walmart is racist? (very short video)

In the UK, migrants, even illegal ones, are given priority for housing over the locals.

  9. Ed Case says:

People hav e been living in tents under and around the William Jolly Bridge for at least 20 years that I know of.
It’s doable because the nearby St Vincent de Paul provides cheap meals and other Brisbane City Council Services [LNP prop.] help rather than hinder.
In a Labor Party wasteland like Bendigo they’re on their own.

  10. Tel says:

The MMT (Massive Money Tsunami) happened during 2020 and 2021, mainly to prop up the bank’s homeloan business and to fix up the stock market crash … by far the biggest monetary intervention in Australia since WWII rationing.

This was followed by the wave of inflation that everyone predicted (except government economists) and then by the savage interest rate hike trying to stuff that toothpaste back into the tube. For first home buyers it was a matter of reeling out plenty of rope, let then get it nicely round their necks and yank it in nice and hard … those people who went out on a limb on 2021 to buy a property are strapped. Inflation has cranked up the cost of materials and labour … building companies are going broke because the contracts they signed are now impossible to fill.

High interest rates have terrified both the banks (holding onto 30 year government bonds at lower than market rate they are sitting on unrealized and unrecoverable losses) and also frightened off any future bank customers … home buyers are waiting for prices to drop and trying to figure out how they can deal with the cost of living. Meanwhile anyone with a house to sell is waiting for prices to rise (inevitably the central banks must call Uncle and pivot their strategy) so the only people selling are distressed sales.

Into to this chaos, government has thrown open the floodgates for the highest immigration rates in my lifetime and on top of that threatened to interfere with the market such as removal of negative gearing or various direct government takeover schemes. Obviously this only adds to the chaos … and I guess they must have intended to do that, because there’s only so much benefit of the doubt you can offer.

  11. Tony Taylor says:

Why is it that depressing situations like these – around 20 minutes from where we live – are always in staunchly Labor electorates? Bendigo and its hinterlands are Labor locally, stately and federally. And you’re right, if Scomo was PM, he’d cop all the blame. ABC is shameless.

  12. Buccaneer says:

Albo’s heart is not in the immigration changes that need to happen, dropping by a third won’t touch the sides. The backlog of housing development and infrastructure is so great and his need to ensure his mates are comfortable on the velvet so existential that it can only ever be window dressing. Obviously, the internal party polling shows the heartland voters have more clue about basic supply and demand economics than his entire shabby team.

  13. Ed Case says:

It’s the Whitlam /Snedden/Fraser scenario all over again.
Albanese will have to call an Election soon and go into minority government in order to give the Liberal Party an excuse to ditch Dutton.
Guessing that the LNP will find a safe seat for Frydenburg on the Goldey.

  14. Tel says:

The ALP are not in the least bit worried … worst case, they loot what they can, while they can, and let the Liberals try and fix it while Labor jeer from the sidelines.

    Anything else is gravy.

  15. Perfidious Albino says:

Bendigo is the VIC Premiers electorate, can’t even do her best for the people who directly elect her…

  16. Alfonso says:

Whinge heaven here. In fact Australian living standards on every measure are not only at their highest ever, but are globally at the top. Yet we have so many people whining. Yes, there are homeless people. Many of them have mental illness. Often it’s the result of drug abuse. But that’s not a new experience. It’s also not at all like the depression. That is, nothing like it. Get a grip.

  17. Lee says:

Tell all that to the ABC too, Alfonso, after all it is them which is reporting it.

  18. Lee says:

An ABC report on encampments of the homeless – I dub them Albovilles – doesn’t name the PM.

His name is not Howard, Abbott, or Morrison.

  19. Buccaneer says:

Alf’s solution to the problem, stick his head up his own ar$3 and pronounce there is no problem.

Most people in San Francisco have a high standard of living, it also happens to be the homeless capital of the us and the street poop capital of the world. Hey, but Alf is mighty fine with casting aside the most vulnerable Australians, maybe he’ll suggest they can join the vad queque.

  20. twostix says:

    Let them eat cake!

  21. Bazinga says:

Alboville is a good name. (Tax) Hooverville is better.

  22. Tel says:

Wow the economic indicators are at an all time high … Just like Alfonso says. Here’s a good example.

    https://www.ceicdata.com/en/indicator/australia/tax-revenue–of-gdp

Australians are paying the highest taxes evahhhh! And we are beating most of the world in taxation … such a lot to be proud about. No wonder Australian people are so happy … rah rah you go Australia.

And here’s another good comment from Struth – It’s quiet!

  24. Buccaneer says:

Take a look at real estate prices in the bush. The correlation between land size and price has been diluted to the point that a 5 acre plot with a nice house is worth more than a 100 plus acre working farm. The correlation between value and price is distorted in the cities too.

These distortions are an indicator some is adrift. When the trigger hits the correction could be very large.

  25. Buccaneer says:

Also, don’t underplay how embarrassing a backflip it is for Uncle Albo to cut immigration.
